A Tale of Two Businesses (Mine and Yours)

A QUICK NOTE:   THIS POST IS A BIT LENGTHY, SO I’VE CUT IT DOWN TO THE NITTY-GRITTY  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ THE WHOLE THING, THE STORY CONTINUES AFTER THE PICTURE.  IT’S A FUN-FILLED BACK-STORY OF HOW I FOUND MYSELF WORKING MULTIMEDIA FOR INDEPENDENTLY OWNED BUSINESSES.

NOW ONTO THE POST!

I’ve decided to make an official upgrade in my business.  Up until now, I have primarily offered photo services, with additional media upon request.  JonKPhoto is now actively marketing a full selection of media services, from photo and video, to advertising and social media.

Basically, if you think your company could stand to have a classier look, market more effectively, and acquire more customers, give me a ring and we’ll chat.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on a brochure for the multimedia services.  It’s a bit of a read, but there’s a pretty solid rundown of the primary forms of media that companies need and why they’re important.

… and now a little bit of back story.

Over half a decade ago, I decided I wanted to turn my photography hobby into a career.  Just like Stieglitz, Ansel adams, or Kenro Izu, I would surely travel and capture the beauty of the world through my view camera.  Once I felt my journey had gone on long enough, I would regal the swarming masses at gallery openings in Prague and cocktail mixers in New York, all while sporting my slimming black turtleneck and artist’s (pronounced arr-teest’s) beret.

What a massively self-righteous and, frankly, preposterous assumption.

Luckily, my yearning to capture the “soul of our planet” was destined to be stamped out by a solid dose of Bruckheimer and Old Spice ads.  I quickly learned that the populace wasn’t about to swoon for ethereal black & white prints.  No – they wanted explosions, humor, and cleavage.  (I know that sounds an awful lot like ‘Murica, but you’d be surprised how much of the world is on that train.  Case in point: Bollywood.)

So, I quickly learned how to evoke public interest while still getting to blow things up (figuratively and literally).  The problem was that I began my career right in the middle of The Recession.  Bad move – I know… but I muddled through and paid my proverbial dues.

I’m not totally sure when it hit me – maybe it was just gradual and I just kind of rolled with it.  Commercial work is regular, pays better, allows for more exposure, and looks super-impressive on a resume.  The problem is breaking into it.

Then a happy accident.

I tripped, stumbled, and fell face-first into the world of local businesses.  You may think to yourself, “Yeah, but how much work is there?”  Actually, there’s a ton.  Sure, you know that corporations compete, but when people’s livelihood directly relies on a company’s profits, that competition can get a lot more interesting.

More than that, it’s fun.  It’s neat to see your work in a commercial for a national product, but when you can actually watch the interest in a business resonate through your community, that actually means something.

So, I spread my media wings and dove into video, design, branding, marketing, and advertising.

It’s also fantastic to be able to work directly with owners instead of getting funneled through an ad agency that may or may not actually know what the company wants.

So where is this all leading?  Well, I’ve decided to make an official upgrade in my business.  Up until now, I have primarily offered photo services, with additional media upon request.  JonKPhoto is now actively marketing a full selection of media services, from photo and video, to advertising and social media.
